The Injury and Pain Relief Clinic

Well, it is interesting to me that the rest of the medical world (at least here in the West) is finally recognizing that mistakes have been made, and conclusions jumped to, in regard to body pain issues. I had three different clients bring up the NY Times article on plantar fasciitis... and the fact that no inflammation was found. And so, here we have one of the many mistakes in Medicine being looked at again, and hopefully corrected.

Fasciitis translates into inflammation of the fascia. And since no inflammation (or even markers of inflammation) have been found in the severe chronic plantar fasciitis cases studied, the condition needs a new name... Plantar Fasciopathy. Fasicopathy translates as a pathology of the fascia, which one can interpret as dysfunction of the fascia. The change in words may seem subtle, but it is an important distinction as the diagnosis is how treatment is chosen... and plantar fasciitis includes anti-inflammatory medication (which doesn't do anything to help solve the issue people are having!).

So maybe this is a change in the current system to start recognition of fascial problems, and hopefully it will result in proper non-invasive treatment.

If you are interested in reading the NY Times article, you can find it here: http://well.blogs.nytimes.com/2013/02/20/no-consensus-on-a-common-cause-of-foot-pain/
